The app, developed in Romania in 2011, has stood the test of time and now is among the leading VPN service providers.
CyberGhost VPN is used by more than 30 million people with the purpose to hide their sensitive data from the prying eyes, to get access to the restricted content and to prevent hacking attacks.
I decided to check if the service’s popularity is concerned with the good work of CyberGhost marketing team or it is really worth using this VPN software.
With that in mind, I’ve installed the application on a set of devices and carried out numerous tests to check how good it copes with the tasks a good Virtual Private Networks does.
Here’s what you’ll get to know after reading this CyberGhost VPN review:

- User Reviews about CyberGhost
With the purpose to prepare the most unbiased review, I have tried different variants of CyberGhost use: free (24-hour trial period) and paid (premium package).
I have also contacted the customer support team to find the answers to all the questions and evaluate its work.
CyberGhost is on the list of the best VPN services in many ratings, and this review answers the question “Why?”.
CyberGhost is among the top VPN services because of the facilities it provides its users with.
One of these outstanding features is NoSpy servers. Such servers are located in the special bunker-basement placed in Romania only. These servers are managed directly by the CyberGhost company.
Apart from this, there are some other peculiar features of CyberGhost. First, I propose you to have a look at them:
|CyberGhost VPN pros||CyberGhost VPN cons|
|⊕ Romanian based VPN||⊗ Speed drops|
|⊕ 24-hour free trial||⊗ High price for a 1-month subscription|
|⊕ NoSpy servers|
|⊕ No IP or DNS leaks|
|⊕ Logs aren’t kept|
|⊕ 14/45 money-back guarantee|
|⊕ 7 simultaneous connections|
|⊕ 3600+ servers in 59 countries|
|⊕ Kill Switch function|
|⊕ P2P servers|
|⊕ Unblocks 40 streaming services|
|⊕ Live chat support|
|⊕ Cross-platform compatibility|
I definitely recommend using this service in view of its second-to-none NoSpy servers, fast support service, numerous useful facilities and extremely handy VPN apps. That’s exactly why I have paid a 3-year subscription!
Read the full review and find out more about its functions.
And now it’s time to delve deeply into characteristics of the provider.
- What makes people pay about $72 annually for the subscription?
- Is CyberGhost safe to use while downloading torrents?
- What functions of the service are the most/least beneficial?
In this section of CyberGhost VPN review, I’ll provide you with the answers to all these questions.
CyberGhostVPN: All Advantages of the Service
If you are not sure if CyberGhost is for you, this part of the review can change your mind.
I’m not going to persuade you to subscribe for this service. I just want to show you all the benefits this provider has.
Moderate Price – $2.75/mo
The first thing that makes many internet consumers around the world choose free providers is the VPN cost. Sometimes it may run to $15-17 monthly.
However, CyberGhost gives big discounts – up to 79%.
Its monthly cost is $12.99. But when paying for a 3-year package, the price is only $2.75 per month – rather cheap for a VPN. Thus, it’s one of the best paid VPN services with moderate pricing system.
Facility to Use CyberGhost Free
Up to November 2018, users had an opportunity to try CyberGhost free version. It worked as a marketing model and served to attract new clients.
However, good things are always worth paying for, and the services provided by CyberGhost are not an exception.
As of May 2019, there are no free packages.
Instead, CyberGhost offers an alternative variant to its free plan – a trial period.
There are two variants:
- a 24-hour free trial (available for desktops, payment details are not required in this case);
- a 7-day free trial (available for mobile versions, payment details are required).
If you choose the second variant, you’ll be charged automatically after 7 days of a free trial VPN use.
During a period of the free trial, I’ve made use of all the facilities of the service. There were no restrictions in bandwidth, speed, servers or functions.
Refund Period is Available
The provider offers a period when any user has the right to get money back in case one is not satisfied with the CyberGhost services or cannot use it.
The refund period is different for different packages:
- 14 days (1-month plan);
- 45 days (1-year and 3-year plans).
To ask for a refund, you can:
- email the support team at support [at] cyberghost.ro;
- create a ticket on the site of the provider;
- contact live chat support specialist.
Protection of 7 Devices per Subscription
If you have a big family and want to protect all its members, CyberGhost is exactly what you are looking for. This service offers 7 multi logins per 1 paid account.
Perfect Network of Servers
The servers park of CyberGhost counts more than 3600 servers, and its number is constantly growing.
Besides, they are located in 59 countries all around the world. It serves well to go round the restrictions and surf the Internet anonymously.
But what I like most about CyberGhost servers is that some of them are tweaked for streaming.
Apart from it, there are P2P servers which are perfect for torrenting.
Note! Having subscribed for CyberGhost, you have a chance to use a dedicated IP for an extra cost.
Non-Stop Kill Switch Protection
The function of Kill Switch is always enabled by default. It’s implemented with the purpose to prevent possible leaks when VPN connection drops. But actually, I haven’t observed such cases when using CyberGhost.
The provider allows customizing the VPN client according to your needs. In this regard, some functions can be changed whenever you like.
Here is what you can do:
- change protocols;
- use TCP instead of UDP;
- use a random port to connect;
- DNS leak protection;
- enable/disable IPv6 connection when connected to the VPN.
All these features influence both security level and speed. However, I find it very convenient to change the settings depending on what I’m going to do on the Internet.
Strict Zero Logs Policy
Under no conditions, CyberGhost VPN provider stores or processes logs about its subscribers.
Absence of lagging activity allows me to add this provider to the list of the best ones to use on Windows in 2019.
More details about its logging policy you’ll find in the section devoted to CyberGhost security test results.
NO Ads Anymore
Having equipped your devices with CyberGhost apps, you acquire a great opportunity to get rid of annoying ads.
Just enable this function in the client’s settings and the system will do its work.
CyberGhost ads blocker removes the part of the third-party code and prevents the ads from being shown on the screen of your device.
24/7 Customer Support
The live chat support provided by CyberGhost is perfect. The specialists answer within less than a minute.
Besides, I’ve contacted it at a different time of day and night to check whether it’s really 24/7 or not. And my findings are the following:
- CyberGhost live chat is really available round-the-clock;
- the specialists of the service provide users with detailed answers.
Apps for all Popular OS
Here’s the full list of the gadgets compatible with CyberGhost:
- desktops (Windows, macOS);
- mobile devices (iOS, Android);
- browsers (extensions for Chrome and Firefox);
- TVs (FireTV, Amazon Fire Stick, Android TV);
- Linux devices.
CyberGhostVPN: Unbiased View on its Drawbacks
Alongside with the numerous advantages of the provider, CyberGhost has some disadvantages.
And here I am to highlight them all.
Speed Drops up to 70%
I have tested the speed on 37 CyberGhost servers to find the fastest one. I’ve changed settings, enabled and disabled different functions to establish how does it all influences the speed.
The result wasn’t great. The servers performed slow speed.
It’s advisable to connect to the nearest servers. Besides, servers for streaming are usually faster than the ones for P2P file-sharing.
In order for me to prepare the most all-around CyberGhost VPN review, I’ve conducted a detailed study of provider’s website, apps and all the features.
In this part of the review, you will get to know how to install CyberGhost on Windows PC and how to do it free of charge.
Besides, you’ll find out what sites CyberGhost VPN unblocks and what servers are the most beneficial for torrenting.
How to Install CyberGhost on Windows PC?
While browsing the site, I’ve found information that CyberGhost allows trying its apps free of charge for 1 day. To make use of it, I’ve registered on the site first.
The valid email was required. Also, I had to create a strong password. The next thing I’ve seen on the screen after the registration was PUK. It could be used to recover an account in case I lose my login details. If PUK lost, the customer support team wouldn’t help you.
After it, I opened the site and downloaded the VPN client for Windows. I accepted the ‘Terms and Conditions’ to continue the setup process.
When the client was installed, I entered my credentials.
Note! It’s possible to create an account after the CyberGhost client is installed. Not all VPNs allow doing it.
The next step was to activate a free trial. I checked my email and found a letter from CyberGhost. I followed the instructions inside it and clicked on the link to verify the account.
However, I faced a trouble – I couldn’t use CyberGhost.
To solve this problem, I contacted the support team and explained the situation (the account was created, and the free trial was not activated). The support service specialist has activated my free trial account, and I started exploring the app on my Windows laptop.
Well, here’s what I see when opening the application:
- the list of favorites (a user can add certain VPN servers to this list to find them quickly);
- the list of all servers (they are classified according to their locations);
- optimized servers for streaming (there are dedicated servers for 40 different streaming services);
- connection features might be changed to get maximum VPN protection (here you can switch on the functions to block ads, malicious sites, online tracking; also, you can enable data compression and HTTPS redirect);
- smart rules allow creating your own privacy triggers to make your data protected (autostart, auto-connect on startup, auto app launch, Wi-Fi protection, etc.);
- opening settings (I can change protocols, enable DNS leak protection, disable IPv6 connection, turn on the automatic kill switch, change language and app appearance).
CyberGhost: Is it the Best VPN Software for Netflix?
In spite of the fact that CyberGhost VPN offers 3 servers optimized for Netflix, only one of them is located in the United States. Of course, I’ve connected to it to check if it manages to unblock the US Netflix content.
As you can see, CyberGhost has unblocked US Netflix (Planet Earth II). The streaming was perfect – no lags or buffers were observed.
I have checked about 20 series and movies that are available only for the US residents. I got access to all of them!
Thus, I can conclude that the top rated VPN is among the best ones for streaming Netflix.
Apart from Netflix, CyberGhost has optimized servers to provide its subscribers with access to other streaming services.
Here is the full list:
|Amazon Prime||Crunchyroll||HBO Now||RMC|
|BBC Two||Europe 1||NBC||TF1|
|Canal +||FoX||Netflix (3)||YouTybe (3)|
|CBC||Fox Sport||ORF||YouTube Red|
|Channel 4||Globo Sportv||Player.pl||ZDF|
|Comedy Central (2)||HBO GO Romania||Radio France||7TV|
I’ve noticed that only Comedy Central, Netflix and YouTube are available on more than one server. However, it doesn’t have a bad influence on speed. Thus, when I decided to access Pandora through a dedicated server, 27 people were using it at that moment. But the speed was fast enough.
How Does CyberGhost Work with Torrents?
If you are concerned about your privacy while downloading torrents, you can make use of CyberGhost P2P servers. They are located in 40+ countries around the world.
Apart from anonymous torrenting, you acquire an opportunity to:
- unblock any torrenting website blocked in your country (just connect tone of torrent-friendly countries and surf the network under third-party IP address);
- prevent your internet service provider from throttling your bandwidth or reducing the speed.
I have tried CyberGhost when using different torrent clients: uTorrent, BitTorrent and qBittorrent. All of them worked perfectly well. There were no troubles with the search through the client. Besides, all functions worked flawlessly.
Thus, CyberGhost is not only a secure VPN but also a tool to get access to the torrenting sites.
But perfect restrictions bypassing is not enough to call the service the best VPN. The provider should perform perfect speed results and provide its clients with first-class security.
To see into the matter, I have carried out a set of tests.
Speed Test Results
Before I start testing the VPN speed, I always check the speed when the VPN is not activated. This time, the download speed of my internet connection is 77.33 Mbps, upload speed is 76.87 Mbps.
I’ve checked it through a wired connection because Wi-Fi networks often slow down the speed.
The nearest server to me was located for about 100 km. The speed drop was about 60% (download speed – 30.84 Mbps). I cannot say I was satisfied with the result. That’s why I kept on searching for the best server.
I have also tried CyberGhost servers in Germany, Poland, the UK, the USA, Australia, Romania, France and other regions.
One of the fastest servers for my location was placed in the UK.
Not bad speed test results if compare with the rest locations. The upload speed was 55.68 Mbps, download speed – 25.46 Mbps.
In the ‘Benefits and Features Tests’ of this CyberGhost review, I have pointed out that the provider offers the servers optimized for streaming and torrenting.
In this regard, an interesting hypothesis came to my mind – these servers should perform better speed than the ones meant for 100% anonymous web surfing.
I’ve chosen CyberGhost servers for torrenting and streaming located in the UK.
The server for torrenting hasn’t shown great results. Vice versa, the speed became even slower – 12.03 Mbps (download) and 31.68 Mbps (upload).
CyberGhost server for streaming hasn’t been fast either.
That’s why this provider isn’t on the list of the fastest VPNs for 2019.
Having read CyberGhost reviews on other sites, I’ve found information that it performs the fastest speed. But such findings were not supported by facts or screenshots. Therefore, I wouldn’t believe them.
How Good is CyberGhost in Terms of Leaks?
Having checked CyberGhost speed, a challenging idea came to my mind – slow speed of the servers can be the consequence of high-class protection against cyber attacks, monitoring and throttling.
Well, let’s check how secure it’s to use the CyberGhost application on my PC.
I’ve carried out a set of tests to make certain of CyberGhost high security.
The first test was concerned with the possible DNS leak. When the DNS is leaking, third parties have a chance to know what you’re doing online. I’ve chosen an extended test.
The results above demonstrate that no DNS leaks were detected.
The next test was concerned with IP leak. I used the online tool IPleak [dot] net. No leaks again!
As you can see, CyberGhost has passed all the leak tests successfully, which means that interested parties don’t have an opportunity to track your online activity.
What Protocols are on Offer?
The VPN protocols determine the level of security the service provides its clients with.
CyberGhost supports 3 protocols:
- OpenVPN (it’s the best modern tunneling protocol which performs perfect security level and fast speed, however, it can be unhandy to configure it on some devices);
- L2TP/IPsec (compatible with all modern OS, very secure due to IPsec, but slower than OpenVPN);
- PPTP (this fast protocol is built in almost all operating systems, which allows using CyberGhost on all popular platforms; its weak side is lower security level as compared with other protocols).
Military-grade 256-bit AES encryption makes users’ traffic 100% safe and protected against ISP and other interested parties.
Does CyberGhost Keep Logs?
With the purpose to find all the truth about CyberGhost logs, I have studied its documents published on the official site of the provider.
CyberGhost doesn’t track the following information about its users:
- browsing history;
- traffic destination;
- search preferences;
- data content;
- IP address;
- DNS queries.
The fact that the VPN provider doesn’t track such data gives reason to believe it’s one of the securest VPNs in the market. CyberGhost doesn’t know when you start using this or that site, what servers you choose and what your original IP is.
Summarizing the above, I must conclude that CyberGhost is a REALLY secure VPN provider to use in 2019. It offers top tunneling protocols, the securest traffic encryption and transparent no-logs policy.
Many users call CyberGhost the best VPN for PC, smartphones and other IoT gadgets. But I reckon that some weak sides of the provider should be fixed. And who knows maybe CyberGhost will become number one upon a time.
Share your opinions about the use of the provider in case you have already tried it!
To make your torrenting activity safe and anonymous, you are to run the CyberGhost app on the device you are going to use for P2P file-sharing. Connect to one of the servers tweaked for torrenting (choose the category ‘For torrenting’). Open your uTorrent client and start using it securely.
To make use of CyberGhost for Kodi, you are to install the VPN client on any device that compatible with Kodi and support at least one of CyberGhost protocols (OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPsec). Run Kodi only after CyberGhost app is on.
The provider doesn’t offer a free package since November 22, 2018. However, it’s possible to use it free of charge during a period of free trial (1 day for desktops, 7 days for mobiles).
