Provided that I’m the only person who tests VPN services and prepares the VPN reviews for you on this site, I took a decision to check user reviews on Reddit.
I have spent 57 hours on reading what people write about VPNs on Reddit. I used different search queries to find appropriate subreddits: best VPN, worst VPN, top VPN provider and etc.
The aims of this research were:
- to find the best VPN providers according to Reddit users;
- to find inferior services highlighted on Reddit;
- to understand if people recommend free VPN services on Reddit;
- to identify what VPN features are the most significant for internet users.
5 Best VPN Providers on Reddit
First, I’d like to present you the results concerned with the best VPNs covered on Reddit. I not only counted the number of positive reviews about the services but also analyzed what features attract users.
Here’re my findings!
NordVPN – Best because of Fast speeds & No logs
Having studied the Reddit website, I’ve found out that this provider is mentioned for more than 173 000 times.
The provider is extremely popular among Reddit users despite the fact that not all people post positive reviews about this service.
Still, the majority of Redditors recommend this service as the best one for gaming, torrenting and streaming. Besides, many of them find it very secure in view of the fact that they stop receiving warning letters from their ISPs (when torrenting).
There are hundreds of NordVPN reviews on Reddit.
NordVPN pros and cons according to Reddit users
This top rated VPN provider is appreciated by Reddit users for a set of reasons:
+ the provider doesn’t keep information except for the data about users’ accounts;
+ VPN servers are fast and diverse (located in 60+ countries);
+ facility to try the NordVPN app free of charge for 7 days (only mobile version);
+ risk-free payment (a NordVPN subscriber has the right to get money back within 30);
+ facility to unblock Netflix and other streaming services.
At the same time, Redditors mention some minuses of the service:
– lack of PayPal payment;
– xpensive plans.
PIA – 10 Devices & 3300+ Servers
The second by popularity on Reddit is Private Internet Access VPN.
It attracts users from all over the world due to the facility to use it on up to 10 devices.
Reddit users mention that even when they connected the maximum number of devices (10), the speed wasn’t significantly changed. Both IT specialists and not tech-savvy users tried this provider and have a positive experience when using it.
PIA pros and cons according to Reddit users
I have placed it on the second position of this rating because it’s mentioned on Reddit as one of the best VPN apps for many online activities.
Here are the most common views on PIA VPN:
+ the app is very handy on all the devices (it’s convenient to switch between the servers + and enable/disable the functions like Kill Switch);
+ the servers are fast enough (users reported about the speed drops about 15-30%);
+ 10 devices per account are allowed.
Feature Redditors dislike in PIA:
– despite a vast number of PIA servers, the number of countries where they are located is relatively small;
– lack of a free trial is not praised by users.
ProtonVPN – Best because of Zero Logs & 7-day Trial
Reddit users appreciate privacy that’s why ProtonVPN is among the most recommended on the site.
The users like this VPN server because of its advanced features: Secure Shell, P2P servers, Tor access. Besides, I haven’t found users’ complaints about slow speed. Vice versa, Redditors point out its fast speed servers. As for me, I wouldn’t say they are very fast.
ProtonVPN pros and cons according to Reddit users
The list of ProtonVPN pluses is rather impressive as compared with many VPNs in the market. Here’s what I’ve found:
+ attractive no-logs policy (frankly speaking, I’m surprised that users highlight such points);
+ a period of free trial is 7 days (some users mention it as a plus point because they use ProtonVPN free of charge when traveling for no more than a week);
+ absolutely free plan is available for all users (however, it offers only 3 countries, protection of 1 device and medium speed);
+ P2P servers suit Redditors’ taste (that’s why it’s recommended to use for torrenting activity on many subreddits).
Among the minuses are:
– high price ($8 for a premium plan);
– scanty server park (only 387 servers in 31 countries).
ExpressVPN – Best because it’s Great for Torrenting & Perfect in China
The next provider that is worth being mentioned in this rating is based in the BVI.
ExpressVPN is highly praised by Reddit users.
That’s not a surprise for me because ExpressVPN has the features many other VPNs lack. For example, the provider offers the functions of Kill Switch and Split Tunneling. The first one serves to prevent user identity disclosure in case a secured connections drop. The second one allows deciding what apps to use through a VPN and what without it.
Redditors find it perfect for torrenting. Besides, I’ve found information that this service works in China.
ExpressVPN pros and cons according to Reddit users
The main features which make people leave positive Express VPN reviews on Reddit are:
+ ExpressVPN is perfect for downloading torrents securely;
+ there are special ExpressVPN servers that work with Netflix (US content);
+ it has a handy app (the client is available on all popular platforms);
+ it’s perfect for travelers (moving from country to country people find it convenient to use ExpressVPN to surf the Internet as if they are at homeland).
Apart from the positive sides of the provider, Redditors highlight its drawbacks:
– expensive pricing system (the lowest possible price is $6.67/mo).
IPVanish – Best because it Works with Kodi
The reason to add IPVanish VPN in this rating is that Redditors recommend it for Kodi.
I’ve found out about 20 user reviews which state that it manages to unblock Kodi addons. Apart from it, IPVanish often offers big discounts. Users like it a lot.
There’s also information about fast speed servers. Some users even prefer IPVanish to NordVPN in view of this index.
IPVanish pros and cons according to Reddit users
I’d like to present you what makes people from all over the world subscribe for IPVanish:
+ facility to make use of the app for Android TV;
+ it works with the streaming and torrenting sites;
+ 10+ US servers that work with Netflix.
The drawbacks also exist:
– no free trial for desktop version;
– troubles when canceling the subscription;
– some users find IPVanish rather expensive (as compared with PIA, for example).
5 Worst VPN Providers on Reddit
Having studied the best VPNs according to the user reviews posted on Reddit, it’s time to find out what providers are NOT RECOMMENDED by Redditors.
I have studied numerous reviews to find the top 5 worst VPN providers and compare them with my results.
PureVPN – Worst because of Possible Logs
PureVPN provider is not recommended by many users and experts after the incident in 2017 when it helped the FBI to find the criminal.
That fact proved that the company kept logs. Since then, users don’t believe that the virtual shield of this VPN can be useful.
I have studied its logging policy when preparing a detailed PureVPN review. The result made my day – transparent no logs policy.
PureVPN cons according to Reddit users
- The provider doesn’t offer a free trial period so that there’s no chance to try it free of charge.
- The speed of internet connection is slowed down significantly when PureVPN app is on (about 7Mbps instead of possible 120 Mbps).
- Users keep on receiving warning letters. It means that PureVPN undergoes leaking.
UnblockUS – Worst because of No Security
Although UnblockUS is not a VPN at all, I’ve found it in subreddits devoted to VPNs. Besides, it’s used to cope with one of the problem VPNs do – restrictions bypassing.
That’s why UnblockUs is also discussed in this article.
Reddit users don’t recommend using this service because of the poor security it provides. To be honest, it wasn’t a surprise for me because it doesn’t use tunneling protocols to route users’ traffic.
UnblockUS cons according to Reddit users
- Neither encryption nor VPN protocols are used by this service.
- It copes with only one function – unblock certain streaming sites (you can have a look at the list in UnblockUS review).
- Redditors find the lack of live chat support very disappointing.
OperaVPN – Worst because of Poor Compatibility
Despite the fact that I’ve found a couple of people who advise using this VPN, the majority of Reddit users downvote OperaVPN.
It can be used in Opera browser only. It’s even not an extension. VPN is built in the browser and can be enabled in a matter of seconds.
The number of locations is extremely small – 3 countries. However, it can be used to unblock a set of American sites (Netflix is on the list).
OperaVPN cons according to Reddit users
- It’s not recommended because it doesn’t work as an average VPN provider – no privacy or anonymity while using the Internet.
- P2P file-sharing is impossible. Users say that it can unblock some torrenting sites, but it cannot protect a torrent client.
- The biggest drawback of this service is that it works only in Opera browser, which is not popular these days. Many users find it absolutely useless although it’s absolutely free.
HoxxVPN – Worst because of Poor Service
This service functions like UnblockUS. It’s not recommended to use for anonymous web browsing. However, it’s not bad for unblocking streaming sites.
This service is very poor for many reasons.
Thus, I haven’t found even at least one user to recommend Hoxx to use. All the references were negative.
HoxxVPN cons according to Reddit users
- Reddit users complain about Hoxx usability.
- Netflix cannot be unblocked when connecting to Hoxx (you can make use of one of the VPNs for Netflix I recommend). Torrenting is not allowed either.
- The worst thing people say about this service is that it keeps logs.
- Besides, customer service is available through email only.
Betternet – Worst because of Slow Speed
The last VPN service I found as not-recommended on Reddit was Betternet. Some Redditors used it to bypass school’s WiFi restrictions. However, not all sites were unblocked.
Apart from it, it has bad speed test results.
Betternet cons according to Reddit users
- As soon as users run Betternet client, they see ads (!). It’s inappropriate.
- Netflix is not accessible.
Having studied user review about VPNs on Reddit, I’ve found out that the top VPN providers mentioned on this site are also praised by Reddit users.
The best VPNs mentioned on Reddit perform good speed test results at large.
I have also found out that Redditors appreciate the following VPN features:
- fast speed servers;
- facility to unblock Netflix and other streaming services;
- affordable pricing system;
- diversity of servers.
It’s worthy of note that it’s possible to find on Reddit coupons to get a discount. Thus, if you are an active Reddit user, you’ll find the way to use a VPN at the lowest possible cost.
